The war on terror takes on “War On Terror: The Game”

A couple months ago, I went with my friend Chris to a gaming conference for a day in Columbus. One of the many games I saw that I almost bought was War on Terror. I didn’t get it because it looked a little too expensive for me. Well, I learned via boing-boing this morning, that had I bought it, I might have had it confiscated.

War on Terror GameNot really. But at least one version the game was seized by police in the UK because the balaclava, which is the little hat thing that says “evil” on it and which is one of the satirical props of the game, could be used in a criminal act. Here’s a link to the article in the Cambridge News, and here’s the blog entry from the War On Terror boardgame web site.

Perhaps the criminal could hit someone with a snow globe. Dirty bastards.

By the way, the photo featured here comes from the WOT web site and is part of contest they’ve had for creative pictures featuring gamers wearing the evil balaclava.

Speaking of YouTube: who knew the popularity of farting videos?

I was browsing through boing-boing and came across an entry on “the original” farting preacher video:

Okay, it’s kind of funny– probably not four minutes worth of funny, but still.

And then I looked at the “related videos,” and saw that there was something like 40 related videos. It would appear that they all have the same premise: television preachers accompanied by strategically placed farting noises. And then I did a search for “farting,” and it appears this is a cottage industry on YouTube, farting noises accompanying politicians, actors, other celebs, movies, cartoons, you name it. Weird.

Oh, the nearly random things the internets brings

Via boing-boing, I read this story about how the (morning?) news anchors of the Las Vegas Fox network have fake/plastic cups of McDonalds chilled coffee sitting in front of them. My initial thoughts were of course: it’s on Fox, and it’s in Vegas. It all adds up.

And then, just following a couple more links, I stumbled across this, Dickipedia: A Wiki of Dicks. Pretty good junior high humor. Here’s the opening paragraphs on the entry about Simon Cowell:

Simon Phillip Cowell (born 7 October 1959) is a British record executive, television producer, “author,” celebrity talent judge, and a dick.

Through the creation of television programs such as American Idol, Pop Idol, and Britain’s Got Talent, he has managed to force both his abrasive personality and the abrasive personalities of a number of mediocre “artists” into homes across the world. Uniquely, while many celebrities became popular despite being dicks, Cowell became a celebrity because he is a dick.

It isn’t a “real” wiki in that you can’t just edit anything, but it still provided me with almost five minutes of entertainment, and what more can we ask from this communication network?

Actual conversation I had at the video store this morning

Or something like this, at least:

The scene: Me at the local Hollywood Video with two DVDs:  disk 1 of the first season of The X-Files, and disk 1 of the first season of Heroes.   We’re seeking video entertainment suitable for the whole family, and we had good luck watching the full runs of Buffy the Vampire Slyer and Firefly on DVD, so we thought we’d give these shows a spin.  I’ve seen all of The X-Files but none of Heroes, so I went for the one disk of each approach.

I take my choices to the counter and to the drowsy young Dude behind the counter.  He looks like someone I would have seen at the Origins convention a few weeks ago: in short, his bad haircut, greasy grooming, piercings, and general surliness suggest a certain kind of uber-geek, one comfortable with science fiction movie trivia, required saving throws in AD&D, and comic book collecting.

Me:  I’d like to rent these.

Dude: (Sighs) Sure, whatever.  (Scans DVD in machine thingy).  Of course, you’re going to be another victim here.

Me: Excuse me?

Dude: Heroes. Horribly horribly predictable.  You’ll figure out everything you need to know after the first six episodes.  Nothing changes after that.

Me:  What about the whole villains  thing?  That’s how they are advertising the next season.

Dude:  Right, like I don’t know how that is going to turn out.

Me:  Aren’t you supposed to be selling the videos here?

Dude:  I only like selling the good ones.  You’ll see what I mean.

Me:  What about The X-Files?

Dude:  That’s excellent, of course.  I’m looking forward to the movie to see what they do with the characters after all those years.  Regardless, these videos are yours until Thursday.

And scene…

The weirdest spam I’ve ever received

I’m pretty sure this is the weirdest spam/email I have yet received, and, like everyone else, I get plenty. Or at least I assume it’s spam.

This comes from “Information Technician <service@hvr4s.com>” with the subject line “Requested update.” I present it in its entirety here:

Recipe: Overnight Fruit Salad

Ingredients

1 small head cabbage, shredded (about 5 cups)
1 15oz can pineapple chunks, well drained
2 11oz cans mandarin orange sections, drained
2 cups seedless green grapes
1/3 cups light raisins
1 1/2 cups cubed Edam cheese
1 8oz carton lemon yogurt
1 cup dairy sour cream

Instructions :

1. Place cabbage on bottom of large salad bowl.
2. Top with pineapple chunks, mandarin orange sections, grapes and
raisins. Sprinkle cheese atop.
3. Combine yogurt and sour cream; spread over salad, sealing to edge of
bowl
4. Cover and refrigerate for 4 to 24 hours. If desired, garnish with
lemon and lime twist, curly endive, and a grape.

That’s it.

Wha? And this frankly sounds like a pretty gross recipe. Though jeez, I hope I’m not offending some relative who has sent this to me disguised as a weird spam…..
