Hummingbird Hawkmoth
We saw a fair number of these while we were in Mittenwald, Germany. They are these tiny tiny hummingbirdsreally big moths that really look more like big moths than birds (apparently, because they actually are moths). They’re kinda freaky.
Anyway, I stumbled across this via boing-boing, and it’s part of janerc’s photos at flickr.

This is the first batch of pictures I’ve been able to upload to Flickr from our trip to Europe, for all of my millions of readers who care about such things.
I’d recommend viewing it as a slide show. If you want to know what you’re looking at while watching the slide show, click on the image. That will stop the show and you’ll see my comments about the image (what you’re looking at, other observations, etc.)
I would upload more but because of some of the snafus I had while in Europe uploading photos, I have maxed out my Flickr upload access for the month. So I guess I’ll have to wait for next week to add to this.
As we leave Italy….
Will and I are at an Internet cafe right now while Annette rests from our travels for today to Fisole, which is a little and very scenic town just out side of Florence. This was our last big trip/stop in Italy; tomorrow, we get on the train toward Mittenwald.
And, to top it all off, I figured out how to upload photos. I think. Anyway, these images are all gigantic– I don’t think this semi-ancient PC has any way for me to edit them down– so be aware that the links you click here will open big images. Oh, and I don’t have my guide book so I might have to correct some of the “facts” of what we are seeing later.
Okay, away we go:
- Picture of Roman Ruins Theater in Fisole Part if this is a new amplitheater, but part of it is Roman from around 100 BC or so.
- Beautiful hills around Fisole and Tuscany.
- Bell tower of the cool and relatively small church in Fisole. The tower is way out of proportion to the rest of the church.
- Will and Annette in front of Roman ruins. See, Fisole is actually a much older town than Florence. These are ruins of Roman baths and on this site, there are more ruins of the Etruscians, who predate the Romans. Old old stuff!
- Pretty views.
- Another pretty view, this one from the archeological museum we toured.
- Annette in a restaurant with a (you guessed it!) a view. I liked the food here better than Annette did, but I have to say that on the whole, my favorite meals have been made with stuff we have bought in the market and ate in our lovely apartment/hotel.
I tried to upload a bit of video I took with my little camera, but it didn’t seem to work. Oh well, maybe in Germany….

I heard this story on NPR just now on the death of Dika Newlin, who was a music teacher at VCU, one of the last (if not the absolute last) students of the composer Arnold Schoenberg, a “punk rocker” in her 70s, and just generally kind of a character (and I mean that in a good way, basically). Interestingly enough, this woman was the “kinda crazy woman” who lived on the first floor of the building where Annette and I shared an apartment when we lived together in Richmond. Small world. Anyway, read more and see pictures here, and RIP, Prof. Newlin. I hardly knew ye.
Prelude to a trip into Chicago
We’re staying out in the ‘burbs of Chicago this weekend, preparing this morning for our trip to the Museum of Science and Industry. I’m a little concerned about the drive into town; we got room service this morning, and the guy who delievered our food spoke about the horrific traffic into town today for the “Taste of Chicago” festival. We’re going quite a bit further south than that, but it’s still a worry.
Anyway, I’ll post info and such about our museum adventures when we get back to Ypsi. Our internet access will be off tonight and tomorrow morning. Twenty-four hours not online: will we make it? Will I make it?

Kind of a cute list I stumbled across. One of the items included on this list is “how to shave;” interestingly enough, this is the second (the first being this one) web site I’ve come across in as many days offering me shaving advice. A message of some sort?
