“Moore Plans Unofficial North American Premiere Of “Sicko” In Michigan.” He’s apparently going to have an unofficial premiere on June 16 in Bellaire, MI, which is “up north,” as they say, kind of around the Traverse Bay area. I’m sure the tickets will be gone almost instantly though.
I could have guessed this, actually
Remember– There’s a Party in Sweden’s Pants!
Via an academic blog (believe it or not) I read once in a while, a thaumaturgical compedium.
Odd foods and food-like items
I have come across several pieces of such food news lately:
- The source for much of this information is the latest web zen on sweet treats.
- The “mad science” of hot rice from cold water.
- Hemp food, chocolate corn chips, and much more at cool hunting.
- Capn Crunch has a first name.
- Pepto ice cream, supposedly a hang-over cure.
The Landlord
Will Ferrell and a small child (I presume his?) in “The Landlord.”
Interestingly enough, this “viral video” that “everyone has already heard about” is something I read about this afternoon in that dinosaur blog technology, the newspaper.
Rolling Stone and “The Dark Side of Oz”
I forgot the book I was planning on reading while at the gym, so I instead picked up a recent (current?) copy of Rolling Stone and thumbed through it while on the elliptical trainer. Kinda fun to browse Rolling Stone about two or three times a year.
Anyway, there was a piece in there about Pink Floyd (I didn’t finish it, but it was a sort of “history of” kind of thing) and they mentioned a link on the web to infamous “Dark Side of Oz/Dark Side of the Rainbow” thing.  Basically, if you watch The Wizard of Oz while listening to the Pink Floyd album “The Dark Side of the Moon,” you get this weird effect of things synching up. I remember one time in Oregon, we tried this with some friends out there (sober, more less too), and I thought it was bullshit.
Well, I still do think it’s kinda stupid. Still, these “mashups” on the Rolling Stone web site are kind of interesting.
Be afraid– BE VERY AFRAID!!!
I came across this via the blog “the chutry experiment;” a bit more explanation about it all is available at the blog In Media Res.
Is it the caffine or the withdrawal?
From BBC News comes “Coffee ‘no boost in the morning.'” From the article:
Those who swear by their morning caffeine fix say it wakes them up, and if they missed out they would feel sluggish and unable to get on with their day.
But the Bristol researchers, who carried out a review of previous studies into the effects of caffeine, say all the drink does is counteract the mild caffeine withdrawal symptoms people are experiencing because they have gone without the stimulant overnight.
First off, I don’t think I buy this. But second, who the hell cares? If coffee is my morning methadone, so be it.
Hmm… coffee….
Detroit People Mover Remix
Detroit People Mover Remix via Google Video (which means you have to click the link to see it).
I have never ridden the Detroit People Mover, which, as I understand it, is basically a monorail to nowhere. Kind of like on The Simpsons. For some reason, I think my parents actually went on this thing once… Anyway, a cool video.
Who knew there were instructions?
A fine Mardi Gras festival!
We had a lovely Mardi Gras party last night over here. This is a new thing for us, but I can see it becoming a regular thing for us. Mardi Gras has all the elements that both Annette and I enjoy: cheap jewelry, bright colors, masks, quasi-pagan/religious rituals, great music, and fine food and drinks.
There’s a set of photos on my Flickr account; a few highlights:
- We had Jambalaya and Muffaletta sandwiches and Annette’s mom’s famous stuffed jalapeno peppers and a whole bunch of other stuff. Darn good eats.
- Oh, I also made a King Cake. Ours had a Chuck E. Cheese coin in it, which I thought was a nice touch. Congrats to Michelle on being named queen of the party for finding the coin!
- I thought we had a nice sized crowd– about 23 or 25 or so– and a nice mix of folks from work, from the neighborhood, and more or less friends of friends. Oh, and we even had some live music from Gerry and Jim on guitars. They wouldn’t play “Freebird,” though.
- The kiddies seemed to have fun too, and no one got an eye poked out. Though Will did get hit upside the head with a wooden sword.
In the left behind category of things: we discovered this morning that one party goer left behind the bag of leftover muffaletta sandwiches on the bench by the front door. Imagine the disappointment! Also, someone left behind a scarf that looks like this:

And now, it’s time to engage in some lent-like behavior. Back on the diet….
