Just in case you were wondering what to get me for Christmas…

I collect snow globes and have done so for a few years now. I probably have about 25-30 of them. The main reason I collect them is because it gives me something to look for when I go on a trip and I inevitably wander into some sort of touristy store: “Hey, I wonder if they have snow globes?” Almost all of my snow globes are pretty cheap, $5 or less. I think the most money I ever spent on one was a snow globe from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. I spent about $20 for it, though it wasn’t as fancy as the one in this picture.

Anyway, there was a very cool picture in Harper’s Magazine this week by the artists Walter Martin and Paloma Muñoz of some very interesting and spooky-looking photographs of snow globes. As far as I can tell, the “art” of all this is actually the photographs, like the ones featured here. But what I want is one of the snow globes.

Actually, I visited the web site for PPOW, a gallery that represents Martin and Muñoz and saw this one, called “Travelers LXXIX” that I thought looked pretty cool:

At the gallery web site page for this, it says “send an email about this piece.” So I did, said I liked it a great deal, and I asked how much it was. They emailed me back a very nice note and said $4000.

So, if anybody out there wants to get me a really REALLY special gift….
